Matthew Arnold (1822–1888) — Victorian criticism-এর প্রধান কণ্ঠ। সিলেবাসে The Study of Poetry (1880): ধর্ম-দর্শনের নিশ্চয়তা ভেঙে পড়ার যুগে কবিতাই মানুষের ভরসা হবে — এই ঘোষণার প্রবন্ধ।

- Grand style ও শ্রেষ্ঠত্বের মানদণ্ড — বিষয় ও শৈলীর যুগল উৎকর্ষ: "superior character of truth and seriousness" + "superiority of diction and movement"
